The Registrar of Financial Institutions
The Registrar of Financial Institutions (the Registrar) is designated under section 8 of the Financial Services Act as the regulatory and supervisory authority for the financial services sector in Malawi. This sector encompasses a wide range of financial entities, including Banks, Capital Markets, Financial Cooperatives, Insurance, Microfinance, and Pension services. The Registrar plays a crucial role in overseeing and regulating these diverse financial sectors to ensure their stability, integrity, and compliance with the provisions of the Financial Services Act. Additionally, the Registrar is entrusted with overseeing credit reference bureaus, ensuring compliance with anti-money laundering/counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) regulations within the financial services sector, and safeguarding consumer protection.
