Profile

Mr. Henry H. Mathanga is a seasoned central banker with over 40 years of service at the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM). He is RBM’s Deputy Governor – Economics and Regulation, a role in which he provides strategic leadership over the formulation, coordination, and execution of the Bank’s core economic, monetary, and regulatory functions. As Deputy Governor, Mr. Mathanga is responsible for providing strategic oversight of monetary policy formulation and implementation; leading the Bank’s economic research, analysis, and policy advisory functions; overseeing the regulation and supervision framework to promote financial system stability; guiding exchange rate policy analysis and macroeconomic surveillance; ensuring alignment between economic policy decisions and financial sector regulation; advising the Governor and senior management on macroeconomic developments, risks, and policy responses.


Career

He joined the RBM in 1984 and has risen through the ranks to occupy several key strategic and executive leadership positions, including Deputy Governor – Operations, Executive Director Corporate Affairs, Director, Financial Markets, Director Exchange Control, Director Administration, and Director, Governor’s Office. He is widely regarded as a technically strong and institutionally grounded leader in the application of modern, market based central banking frameworks; and has pioneered several landmark reforms and strategic projects that have strengthened Malawi’s financial market infrastructure and central banking operations, including: Automation of the Malawi Stock Exchange trading system; Introduction of a Central Securities Depository for government securities and equities; Structuring of trade finance facilities to support strategic imports; Introduction of market oriented instruments for monetary policy implementation; Modernisation of foreign reserves management frameworks; Development and implementation of a salary review policy at the Reserve Bank of Malawi.


Academic

Mr. Mathanga holds a Bachelors degree in economics from the University of Malawi; a Masters degree in Banking and Finance from the Fin Africa Institute of Finance, Milan, Italy and is currently working towards Certification in Financial Risk Management as part of his ongoing professional development
