Mr. Kaluso Chihana

Director, Pension and Insurance Supervision

Kaluso is a result driven financial sector supervision specialist, with extensive experience in regulation and supervision of financial institutions, including banks, pension and insurance entities, spanning over a period of more than 23 years. He assumed the position of Director, Pension and Insurance Supervision on 1 March 2025, and his main role is to oversee the supervision of all pension and insurance entities in Malawi with the objective of promoting the safety and soundness of the entities, and monitoring that they maintain the highest standards of conduct in their operations. He leads a team of examiners to see to it that pension and insurance entities fulfil their obligations to pension members and policyholders, and the general public.

Prior to his appointment, as Chief Examiner for Life Insurance & Pension Funds, he managed the supervision of pension funds and life insurance companies since 2017 where he played leading roles in the development of a risk-based supervision approach for insurance companies and development of mortality tables for Malawi. Between 2011 and 2017, he held the position of Chief Examiner, Non-Prudential Compliance where he was part of the team that set up a supervisory framework for pension following enactment of the Pension Act in 2011. Kaluso was in the team that championed financial sector reforms culminating into enactment of various financial services laws. Passionate about responsible leadership, he firmly supports the view that corporate decisions must be underpinned by ethical considerations, made in a collaborative approach, and have due regard to sustainability of the wider society.

As an undergraduate, he studied economics, emerging with a Bachelor of Social Science Degree from the University of Malawi. He later obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Risk Management from Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom and a Master of Philosophy in Development Finance from Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
