Profile
Mr. Jimmy Mwenye is a seasoned macroprudential analyst with over 18 years of experience in both domestic and international settings. He has extensive experience in financial regulation, supervision, and compliance assessment of the banking and non‑bank financial sectors, as well as in macroprudential analysis and the formulation of macroprudential policies. In his current role as Head of Financial Stability, he is responsible for macroprudential surveillance and the formulation of macroprudential policies. He leads consolidated and comprehensive macroeconomic and macroprudential analyses of the financial system, which provide the analytical basis for both monetary policy and financial stability policies.
Career
Before assuming his current position, Mr. Mwenye served as Principal Analyst, Financial Stability. He has also previously worked as Manager, Capital Markets, at the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Committee of Insurance, Securities and Non-Bank Financial Authorities (CISNA) in Mauritius. In this capacity, he worked closely with and supported the Secretary General and the Chairperson of the Capital Markets Sub-Committee. His responsibilities included overseeing the operations and assignments of the Capital Markets Sub-Committees across the 16 SADC member countries, with a focus on harmonization of legal and regulatory frameworks, capacity building, and market development.
Mr. Mwenye has held various roles at the Reserve Bank of Malawi, including Acting Chief Examiner, Bank Regulation; Principal Examiner, Bank Regulation; Principal Examiner, Capital Markets and Microfinance Regulation; Senior Examiner and Examiner in Regulation and Supervision Departments; and Senior Economist, Financial Stability, in the Economic Policy and Research Department.
Academic
He holds a Master of Science in Investment and Finance from the University of Strathclyde (United Kingdom) and a Bachelor of Accountancy degree from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (formerly The Polytechnic).
Other Experience
He is a World Bank/ESAAMLG-trained assessor of states' compliance with Financial Action Task Force (FATF) standards. He is also a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship award and a Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) alumnus in Public Policy and Management from the University of South Africa, Graduate School of Business Leadership.
