Mr. Henry Mathanga
Deputy Governor, Economics & Regulation
Henry Mathanga is a career central banker having worked in the Reserve Bank of Malawi for over 36 years. During the period, he has risen through the ranks to become the Deputy Governor, Operations responsible for all operations in the Bank. He has worked in various departments of the Bank including; Foreign Flows Monitoring, Accounting & Finance, Economics Policy & Research, Governor’s Office, Financial Markets and Administration. He has spent most of his working career in Financial Markets Department and as such most of his central banking experience relates to the field of financial markets, especially in areas of: monetary policy implementation, foreign reserves management, financial markets development, structured trade finance, treasury management, and exchange rate management.
Furthermore, he is an accomplished expert in international reserves management and trade finance. He has headed teams that have successfully implemented several projects in the Bank, notably: automation of the Malawi Stock Exchange Trading System; introduction of the Central Securities Depository for government securities and equities; structuring of trade finance facilities for strategic imports for Malawi; introduction of market oriented methods of monetary policy implementation; modernization of foreign reserves management in the Bank; and introduction of a salary review policy in the Bank.
Mr Mathanga holds a Master’s Degree in Banking & Finance from Fin Africa Institute of Finance in Milan, Italy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Chancellor College, University of Malawi, obtained in 1984.
